A Perspective on the Promise and Pitfalls of Artificial Intelligence in Clinical Drug Development.

Kannan Natarajan, Pfizer Inc.

The advance in high-speed computing and accessibility to large volumes of diverse and rich data, coupled with the availability of smart algorithms, have presented considerable challenges and opportunities to pharmaceutical companies and regulatory agencies in the efforts to develop much needed medicines with speed, quality and efficiency.  In this talk, we highlight the potential role of artificial intelligence (AI) at every stage of drug development, from drug discovery to the design and execution of clinical studies intended for registration, while stressing the need to be vigilant about unintended consequences that might inauspiciously impact patient safety and privacy. Illustrations of AI use will be provided with reference to best practices routinely implemented at Pfizer.
